It isn't even in Alpha yet. It's in development. No firm dates on anything, betas/RCs will be released when they are ready.

Ermm, when software is in development it is in Alpha stage, so phpBB 2.1.2/2.1.3/2.2.0 is in Alpha stage.

2.2.0 will be the final version ;) Also, there are varying meanings of the words "alpha" and 'beta'. I'd agree with you cybernitus, but some people insist that alpha isn't reached until feature-completion.

Alpha release is simply an early release where they want somebody to share their pain :)

Beta release means that they cannot find any more bugs so they release it to us so we can find the bugs for them :)

** playing with CVS, but also patiently waiting for beta, RC, Code-Complete 2.2, etc., then we enjoy it immensely; and then we start over waiting again for 2.4, ... , 3.0 in the not-too-distant future :) **

There is technically a stage before alpha called gamma.

The purpose of an alpha release to see how users take to new changes and additions before everything is finalized.

I think you need to polish up on your Greek alphabet. ;)

woops, seems u have stages mixed up.. :P

ok, here are the general term for the stages....

Prototyping ---> Thats before everything, thats in the planning stage, like testing User Interface, no real code involved...

Alpha -----> Also called "User Acceptance" stage, this stage will be start coding which involve end-users to test out user interface, etc, it is not complete, as at this stage, many irregular releases will roll out to test certain features, so, many new major features will be implemented at this stage, the purpose of this:
a) let users know where the developement goes;
b) User can keep inform the developers about the changes needed about the UI.

Beta -----> The user interface should be nearly finalized, but again, changes about UI can also take place, but won't be huge. Major features should all completed.. only left with some minor features.

Release Candidate ---> All user interface and features should all be implemented, in theory, at this stage, only bug fixes involved, but in reality, this stage may still have very minor changes.. ^^

alpha = dev
beta = testing
RC = Release candidates
Final == Release worthy code
