Roadmap question

Post by trenzterra »

Hi guys, just wondering, will BETA versions come out during milestone versions or will BETAs come out after the four milestones?

As and when, and only when they are ready. Not one day earlier or day later.

The order things tend to go in on past experience is:
1. Snapshots (current development progress - unsupported)
2. Milestones (a specified point in development - unsupported)
3. Alpha (May not actually happen)
4. Beta (Any number from 0 upwards - not for use in a live environment - very basic support)
5. Release Candidates (Any number from 1 upwards)
6. Release (The final product)

IMO, Alpha means "feature incomplete, but fairly stable". Beta means "feature complete, but needs a little tweaking", and Release Candidate is "if you don't find any bugs, I'll call this final".

Pardon me if this opens a can of worms :|

I see it as:
Alpha - Crash prone, in progress.
Beta - Finished features, finding side-effects (almost stable).
RC - Should be stable, is complete, call us when you break something.
Final - All you RC callers can STFU now :D.

Of course, not all Alpha software is unstable. It all depends on what is being built and how it's being built.

So in this case Milestones are like Alphas right now since they are building on the features? Will there be a feature lock after milestones? There are many features that I want that are not currently implemented, and I'm a little worried as its already halfway through..

Oh and by the way, when was phpBB 2.2 M1 released? Just curious as I didn't see anything about it...

phpBB2.2 will not be released until either BETA, RC, or the Final (release 1) stage.

They don't complete a milestone and then release it, because that version would still be very broken :D.

The devs just work on their stages accordingly.
They soldify security, check it off, finish the rest of the goals, increment the Milestone number, move on to the tasks for the new milestone.

Milestone 1 was tagged in October 2002 (roughly).
So in this case Milestones are like Alphas right now since they are building on the features?
By my definition, yes.

It's amazing that phpBB 2.2 will be slated for release this year, I thought it was a next year thing heh.
