No, you can't have a beta copy, as one does not yet exist, however you can download the latest CVS snapshot (pre-alpha) of 2.2 @ http://phpbb.sourceforge.net/cvs" target="_blank
Please note, there is no support for CVS, so if you are not confident to play about with php / SQL, then I suggest you leave it until a beta is released.

Hmm... but I might make an account on Lycos or something, just for playing around with this. Then it won't matter if I mess it up.

Or you could set up your own server and that way when you change the code or edit the database (to fix bugs), it's a lot quicker. Also, you can browse offline and you don't need to worry about popups. http://www.apache.com" target="_blank to get you started.

AS posted in another thread, Lycos does not support phpBB. Their permissions are set too tight. Just a question, tho, I've seen pre-alpha and alpha used interchangably, and this confuses me. I've always heard that alpha was the first stage of actually writing code, and so downloading a pre-alpha is a contradiction in terms. Of course, I'm probably wrong on this, but wanted to ask...

I thought that alpha means that it is tested be a few people, before additions are made to make it beta, but I have no idea really :)

As far as I recall, alpha used to refer to internal testing periods before a public beta test. But with private beta tests and the fact that I'm not in the software industry at this time, it's pretty cloudly for me. Mozilla works on a alpha-beta-RC schedule, where alpha is "destablizing" development (in other words, add features), beta is then restabilizing, and RC is the final working out of kinks.

For projects with anonymous CVS or CVS snapshots available, it's different than proprietary, in-house software, in that it's always "public". In these scenarios, it's difficult to apply the terms as they've been used before (or at least as I've heard them described). Personally, I think the Mozilla definition works fine... otherwise, we seem to lose the "alpha" phase, if we just go off and call it pre-alpha.

Even so, each project may have its own definition of each term.

Do you mean v. 2.2 or all vesions? Because I have a v 2.0.4 running here

And also, could someone please tell me a free host that will support phpBB and isn't too busy?

Somewhere in the deep dense fog in my brain, I seem to remember that as well :)
