If you download some CVS snapshots, you will see that a lot of things aren't necissary. These things might slowly be getting taken out, or the team just might be making things a lot more efficient. (woot!)

Not to mention that everytime those snapshots are compressed it comes to a sligtly diffrent size. I would say there was no change just a diffrence in compression.
