Is this what you had in mind? It does work and I'm sure you could change sprites and the font you want.
EDIT: Do note the code in those files are a little outdated so do merge with the latest carefully.
yes indeed. I didn't see that RFC but those are the template vars that would be needed.

This improvement should be developed by nickvergessen, I'm not sure about the current status but already have a ticket and a first attempt.
Still using images, but only as background and under them the text variable.
