I think OP mentioned it because its logical to have it if we're going to go ahead and enhance the social interaction between users within the forum.

Fair point, I may have misunderstood what he was saying. It sounded mostly like he was simply looking for other reasons to incorporate a notifications system, and so this was to give purpose to that idea. This is a perfectly valid request, but I still feel that it would be best as an extension.

Yes, it doesn't have to be integrated in the notifications box, I don't think I elaborated on it much just left people to assumptions and just made examples as to how it would work with notification box. If it was integrated, say, you posted a useful posts and people like it, so you would get notifications saying so many members like it. Just a suggestion if both RFCs were accepted. If not, the feature still would be useful just to have in the footer of a post to see how many people liked (or thanked) for that post.

Like or Thank is two vocab words that in different situations would be appropriate. A social board would probably use like where a support one would probably use thank.

Either way they would both work the same.

The support forums use more the "problem solved" than the thank you.
For all of those, they are quite simple to implement and they co-exist with the rest of the forum system. There's no significant difficulty in doing an extension for this feature. It's just something that adds itself to the code and there's no need to replace or delete any current code in phpBB. It may require an extra table, though and that is not actually a good idea unless it's needed.
I'm still against placing this in the code but I really wanted this as an extension

Problem solved and a thanks are two different things no? Granted, usually if someone solves my problem and I post about it I usually thank whoever helped as well, but solved and thanks are two different vocab words.

Agreed. The [Solved] thing was suggested as a RFC a while back, then I suggested a tags system instead in which [Solved] could be just one of many. I'm not sure if this was accepted to be part of the core.
Sorry for my bad english, still improving.
