[RFC] Close forum instead of disabling it

Post by ecwpa »

I was browsing Microsoft Answers yesterday and I noticed an announcement about the site undergoing system maintenance.

What I liked was the fact that the site was still browsable, the only difference was that login and posting were disabled. I find that solution way more elegant than disabling the whole forum, at least in my case there was no need to keep users from reading while we were doing maintenance.

This can be achieved right now by closing every single subforum manually, but we can do better I think.
Slightly better English than it was in 2005, still improving :D

However, I would keep disabling possible and add this as a new option. In fact, it is not just about posting, what can make problems when updating; also sessions, etc...

Maybe call it "Set forums to read-only".
I like the idea.

Yeah... It would:
"set the forum in such state so that nothing is written in the database during this period"
There's 1 problem, though. What about if an illegal post is written and then the forum entered this state? How can the illegal post be taken care of?

It just won't let them post. There's no way around it.

You could still have moderation like you can if a board is disabled.

I agree with Senky.

But if that happens, there will be changes to the database...

Another thought is... If you can't write to the DB what happens if you are doing maintenance or adding a MOD that needs the DB? My guess would be, only Founder could access the DB.

Idea is great though.
