I think you're missing the point, which is that the original request would not be included in the core but a way to handle it would be included should someone decide they want to do something with it. The OP is welcome to make a MOD/Extension request or make it themselves.

This proposal does not make any sense to me. An "attacker" could also just easily execute the JavaScript we provide.

I'm pretty sure the view counter is not incremented when phpBB detects the user-agent is a bot/spider. This seems to be a sufficient solution to me.
