Any extension of that type is simply obsolete nowadays with modern technology, I can't explain it any better.

It's a shame about the Chameleon project itself, unfortunately I'm in the position of having to say that I don't think it will see the light of day in time for the first release of phpBB 4, unless the developers want to postpone it indefinitely.

Use your roles and leave them in place, this way you will avoid issues in the future.
