You're probably right about "conspiracy", it's most likely only a coincidence, but the downtime is serving them since no captcha update will occur before phpBB.com gets back on (at least it's what one could think). I was thinking about the possibility because to me this hack does not demon...

It really seems that the phpBB GD captcha went circumvented and worst, that some script was released to use the trick to massively spam phpBB3.0.4 forums.
