Try the Prime Anti spam mod (mirrored on my website) and/or set a moderation queue so that all new members first post(s) have to be approved.

Make it so that all new members posts have to go in the moderation queue. That way he can join, but cant post

Can you do the Custom Profile Field (or a variant of it) for guest postings? As I said, we do allow guest postings (with Captcha, but I think I've made it too complex), for my forum setup this is ideal as we only manually activate accounts once approved to join (it's a guild forum for Age of Conan)...
