The problem you have is not with assign_vars, it is with the template object itself. The issue is that the template object cannot be set up before it knows where to look for things like the template directory. This template directory is found when the users information is found. Sounds good, but could you maybe move the mcp template files to template/mcp/ and the ucp files to template/ucp/? That would make working with templates much easier I think. :mrgreen: Also you could add another folder, template/mod/ like you have in the language/en/ folder to try to have modders us...

Sure, but there would have to be another board option disabling or permitting this global OR a per user acl (the first sounds more likely IMO)

Quite some time ago, I tried running phpBB on PHP 6 and it seems to work. On the whole, I am disappointed with the backwards compatability breaking approach that they have chose, they seem to make the wrong decision in this area far too often. The way we handle dates in 3.2 is being overhauled, it will not be as bad as 3.0

I suggest experimenting with xcache, it seems to provide a pretty good variable cache.

My bet is something is wonky with your memcache setup as the caches do not affect how queries get executed or which ones get executed. What can happen is that memcache is not given enough memory and must drop things out of the cache, causing phpBB to update the cache and thus generating more queries.
