Re: Consensus on Attachment Extensions..

From a security standpoint, no for PHP, pl, HTML and XML.

From a logical standpoint, no for bmp. It is not an internet-ready image format, and should not be allowed to attach.

A captcha is enough, trust me.

Re: spammers, and rel='nofollow'

The problem with spamming is not about search ranking anymore. It's about users clicking the links. Most spammers do it because they are paied by refferr or if their number is used when an action is done on the site that is linked. It isn't so much about search ranking as it is about making people c...

Re: IP Logging

IP's are logged per post. If you have m_info access or better, you can click the little questionmark on the right hand side and the IP address will be displayed there.

Re: file uploading

The problem with putting files in the database are the following: Adds an extra layer of abstraction with which a script must cut through to get the file Makes the database larger with each file added Prevents disk cache from working correctly Queries for files normally will not be cached in the que...

Re: Search Backend Selection

I can't quite think of a hugely compelling reason not to index it, Certainly, especially with the performance improvements of Olympus, you're probably right. But I was working on a project where search performance in phpBB 2.0 was awful (it may have been a hardware issue as well...I don't know if w...

Re: Search Backend Selection

The chat section is merely an example of a part of a board that wouldn't be very beneficial to index. I can't quite think of a hugely compelling reason not to index it, but anywho, as noted earlier, the fulltext index does not cost as much as a full set of native search tables, and thus it would be...

Re: Get rid of those bugs!

Let me just note that area51 should not be used as a test to see if a bug has been fixed or not, as area51 does not always run the lastest CVS code. If one wishes to check that a bug has been fixed a CVS copy is the best thing to try.

Re: phpbb future

It's basically the development team saying, "OK, we think it's good to go, we are comfortable having you running a live site on it". Not quite... I think what Eelke was trying to say is RC is the time where you can use it on live sites, where beta isn't (in part of answer to d4rkst4r123's question ...

Re: Search Backend Selection

mysql fulltext search has one disadvantage: if you use it, you cant decide which forums will be indexed and which wont: you have to index all forums. So do that mean the messages from private or mod/admin only forums will also show up on the search results page? If that is so, than that makes MySQL...
