Re: SPAMBOTS - how can we stop them - read FIRST post.

No one needs to know about your domain name to find your forum. Well... Yes and no. I run a small personal web site on my home computer. When I look at the log, I see many attempts to visit without any of the domain names my server is set up for. There are people who run probes that go from one IP ...

Re: Speed

Removing or bypassing the router isn't an option. Far too many other mission critical communications are involved. But I say again, ONLY phpBB has page load stallouts. As for your third sentence, I'm really not very good at ESL. Could you elaborate on what you are trying to say? I don't have slow do...

Re: Speed

Me too. Depends *somewhat* on the time of day, otherwise I can't really pin it down. I have several other sites (two eCommerce, five static sites, and a listserv site - all with very, very low traffic volume) that respond immediately 100% of the time. I have monitored the MySQL database system's &qu...

Suspend Notification Email

I have Activate by Admin set. That is, when the account activation policy is set to "Administrator", the admin receives an email with a link to activate. Additionally, the user signing up receives an email stating that the account is pending. In light of the recent registration-bot issue, ...

Re: SPAMBOTS - how can we stop them - read FIRST post.

I have a test board online with NO links to it other than that Google knows it exists. It has gotten this recent wave of spam too, although most likely not in the numbers that a board with more incoming links would. ;) I have a board that absolutely no one knows about. Except Google. How did Google...

Re: Migrating from Snitz 3.4.05 to phpBB 3.0.4

I did this last November. It's fairly straightforward. Do not think that you can skip any step or not set any setting as being unimportant. It's all important. There is one incredibly important gotcha to look for... If any of your Snitz members created a post that was copy/pasted from a Word documen...

Re: phpbb3 on Windows 2003 IIS6, with PHP5.28/FastCGI - SLOW!

Me, too! Accessing the forums on the internal LAN is no problem. But from home, lots (lots!) of browser timeouts, or half page loads as indicated by the progress bar on the browser, or the HTML portion and some of the graphics but none of the CSS, etc. But I haven't heard any complaints from my user...

Re: recent spambots

I agree with Gideon5L2F: I think the GD-based CAPTCHA has been figured out. Analyzing my server logs for the most recent 5 registrations shows that within just a few seconds, those visitors GET/POSTed up to seven times - presumably fetching CAPTCHA images until one was delivered that could be recogn...
